Smushit: Optimize Your Image Sizes Online

Files under Internet, Web Applications | Written by vtech on Oct 6th, 2008

There are number of image editors available online that can be used to make a little adjustment on our pictures like resizing and cropping. Yahoo also comes up with its own image editor, Smushit. Smushit is purposely built to help internet user to optimize web images (in term of size) without adversely affecting the visual quality.

Basically, Smushit reduces the file size of images by reducing the number of colors used, removing excess meta data, and also strip off other non visual data. It uses image format specific non-lossy image optimization tools to squeeze the last bytes out of your images thus resulting in superb optimization without degrading visual quality and their look. After the optimization is completed, a report will be produced to let you know of how many bytes you have actually saved.

Smush.it comes in different flavours:

  • Upload a bunch of pictures in your browser
  • Provide it with a list of image URLs
  • Get a Firefox Extension to optimize the images found on any web page

Now you have plenty of image editor alternatives and Smushit seems to really deliver.
