Here comes a great news to users and developers. Microsoft recently launched Microsoft Web Application Installer, a useful tool for users and developers to install web applications on Windows. For what it's worth this tool is still in beta version. Basically this tool provides support to ASP.net and PHP applications such as WordPress, DotNetNuke and of course the endless list of applications.

The Microsoft Web Application Installer checks the necessary prerequisites in your system before downloading open source applications from their repository, configuring settings and finally walk you through the installations.
The requirements are as follows.
- You must have administrator privileges on your computer
- Supported Operating Systems: Windows Vista SP1, Windows Vista RTM, Windows Server 2008
- .NET 2.0 Framework
- Supported Architectures: 64-bit & x86
‘Microsoft Web Platform’ is required to simulate the basic environment for these web applications. Both Microsoft Web Platform and Microsoft Web Application Installer can be downloaded from the link given at the very end of this post.
Even though this tool looks promising, it's still hard to gain enough attention from developers since existing tools like XAMPP, allows you to setup a whole LAMP environment on Linux, Windows or even Mac. Users and developers won't be switching to Microsoft Web Application Installer in the near future, at least, that is how we see the future of this latest product of Microsoft.
