Microsoft seems to have lot of big idea for the upcoming version of Microsoft Office where it revealed that the new Office will include browser-based web applications with applications like Word, Powerpoint, Excel etc.
ReadWriteWeb mentioned that the web applications will be lighter as compared to the full desktop applications. It is important to note, though they are light, they still feature lot of functions, making them comparable to other online office suites such as Google Docs.

The Office Web Applications will be compatible with all modern browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari and won’t require any web technologies like Silverlight, so they are accessible to everyone.
