Advanced Micro Devices graphics products group ATI announced that DirectX 11-compatible GPUs is expected to be available in 2009. The announcement was made at the CEATEC trade show which took place in Japan. According to the manufacturer, general purpose computing on GPU (GPGPU) is also expected to prosper in the near future.
ATI plans to complete its ground-breaking transition of the GPGPU manufacturing process to 40 nanometer process technology and the upgrade will definitely unleash new generation of graphics quality in games.
The company also predicted consumer television sets will be higher than 1920 x 1080 resolution by 2009. Coming along with the development is the arrival of Microsoft Surface based devices which will unlock the evolution of multitouch and new input technologies.
Visual technologies are going to be revolutionized once again as had been promised by DirectX 10. Though we heard report from gamers who claimed no obvious visual differences between DirectX 9 and 10 in high end game such as Crysis, it's worth to note that, the only reason why we fail to see significant differences is that developers did not exploit its full potential when they decided to make their content backwards compatible (to DirectX 9.0c).
As primary focus of DirectX 11 revolves on performance we can expect faster frame rates being worked out.
