Ubuntu Privacy Remix is a live CD, based on Ubuntu 8.04. It is purposely built to create a secure working environment for private data. In order to achieve that, several measures are taken to distinguish the Ubuntu Privacy Remix from any other distributions.

Let's see what kind of implementation has it gone through to make it stands out above the rest in term security. First and foremost, the operating system will only boot from CD which means that its data cannot be altered by malware or other forms of malicious software in any way wahatsoever. In addition to that it ignores local hard drives completely. So there is no data can be written or read to those storage devices.

A modified system kernel ensures that no network hardware can be activated which means that there is no possibility for connections to the Internet, local area network or other types of external connections. The only way to work with data is by using extended True-Crypt volumes which can be used to save system configurations and user data. (read working with extended True-Crypt volumes for additional information)

You can download Ubuntu Privacy Remix Live CD directly from this link. The size is roughly 680+ Megabytes and it need to be burned onto a CD after downloading.

The well known alternative to Microsoft Office, OpenOffice 3.0 finally came out from months of beta testing and it is now ready for public download. You can download OpenOffice 3.0 in various mirror sites ahead of the official announcement that is scheduled this Monday 13. For those who are new to OpenOffice, the path to the final download usually resides in the following path (stable/3.0.0/).

This latest version offers several new features and improvements from its last major release, including better Mac support and collaboration capabilities.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 also offers enhanced support for PDF files, allowing you greater control over security, printing, and editing options. You can set passwords for opening and editing, restrict permissions on the file, select how the file can be printed and at what resolution, and control who can alter your documents.

To keep pace with other competitors it now provides support for both previous version of Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt etc.) and the latest Office 2007 & 2008 formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc.). It also supports multiple platforms i.e Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris.
