Modern communication is getting better and even is the simpler form like to 140 character (Short Messaging Service (SMS). SMS was first introduced about a decade ago but has now been ubiquitously around the globe. The proof is everywhere and apparently we can see from the incorporation of SMS in every web 2.0 service and of course Gmail will try to get ahead of the rest when it comes to this..

As we already know SMS is available in chat client and social networks like Windows Live Messenger and Twitter. Where is Google as far as Short Messaging Service (SMS) is concerned? Google keeps pace with the rest by introducing its own SMS utility that allows you to send an email as an SMS.

This new Gmail Labs feature is expected to be released soon; would allow you to text to your friends when they are not on in front of their computers. They can reply back to you via the SMS carrier. It is important to note that there is no official announcement so far whether this will include texting to international numbers.

The feature was used to be released previously but due to some bugs it was pulled out. It will make a comeback in 2 weeks' time, said the Gmail team who promised to fix the bugs as soon as they can. Apparently, this is the most anticipated lab features because SMS has great impact in our daily productivity.

Google is working hard to provide new additions of features in its wide range products. Some of them are successfully implemented with great feedback from its users like Gmail Mobile 2.0 launch, AdSense integration with Analytics and canned responses in Gmail. Here's another feature added into Gmail recently; smiley/emoticon support for emails. This is really a great addition as it changed GMail mail into a more colorful and meaningful mails.

Previously you need use a Greasemonkey script that allowed you to use emoticons in Gmail, this is the thing of the past as this long awaited and anticipated feature has been officially implemented in GMail.
